This February, Franklin County Community Meals Program (FCCMP) is putting on their annual lunch bag collection drive. The Bonus Bag Brigade event’s goal is to engage the community in helping to keep the community fed! This event is a lunch bag drive that provides supplemental meals to the Greenfield Community Meal site patrons who come for a hot meal. Each Wednesday FCCMP gives out 70-90 bagged lunches in addition to hundreds of hot meals at the Greenfield Community Meal site to ensure no one goes hungry when a community meal is unavailable. Many patrons benefit from having non-perishable foods available to supplement the community meals available throughout the week. Additionally, these bags provide a steady resource to the community when the community meals are not in operation. They are stored and made available at the Second Congregational Church as a resource that church administration can hand out to anyone who comes looking for a meal any time of day. This event is a fun and easy way for families and kids to get involved in their community. Families can help by joining the Bonus Bag Brigade. Shop, pack and deliver at least 10 bags on February 26th. Great for kids who want to decorate the bags, for groups looking for something meaningful to do or for someone looking for a quick and easy way to give directly. The Bonus Bag Brigade collection is on February 26th from 4-6 pm at the Second Congregational Church at 16 Court Square by the town common in Greenfield. We are living through unprecedented times. When studying times of crisis, historians, archives, and museums depend not only on the actions of national and international leaders, but on records of daily life. The Framingham History Center is making an effort to collect a digital archive of community members’ experiences of the COVID-19 Pandemic in real time. There are multiple ways you can participate and submit your experiences to this digital archive.

Record a Digital Daily Journal

We have created a Google Sheets template for anyone who wants to record a line-a-day journal during the duration of the pandemic (and beyond). Although you are not obligated to submit your journal to the FHC’s COVID-19 Digital Archive, if you live or work in Framingham, we would greatly appreciate if you considered doing so. Please Note: If you do not have a Google account, you can still save the template as an Excel spreadsheet via the link.

Submit Your Photos

Take photos of your daily experiences during the COVID-19 Pandemic and submit them to our digital archive using the form below. A staff member will review all submissions and will follow up with you when they are able.

What about Traditional Collection Donations?

The FHC is not currently accepting donations of physical objects. We currently anticipate returning to our regular collecting practices in September 2020. In the meantime, here are some examples of items relating to the COVID-19 Pandemic the FHC would be interested in when we resume collecting objects:

  • Projects completed by you or members of your family (crafts, writing, hobbies, etc.)
  • Masks or other PPE made by you for your family (when use has concluded)
  • Curriculum packets created by Framing teachers for school closings
  • Work schedules, family schedules, or any other organizational document you used to organize your daily life
  • Non-digital, handwritten journals or journal entries
  • Other physical mementos of your or your family’s personal experiences in quarantine

Please consider holding on to some of these items to submit to the FHC’s Collections in the future. Please clean or sterilize potential donations as appropriate and place them, with clean hands, in a plastic ziploc gallon bag somewhere safe where it will not be frequently handled.

Due to the COVID-19 public health crisis, there has been an increase in individuals and families visiting the food pantry and a higher than normal need for volunteers to support. This volunteer opportunity is open to the community and any individual with a Boston Cares account and who follows our safety requirements may sign up. Having attended a Boston Cares orientation is not required. Please e-mail [email protected] if you have questions.
Volunteers set up/clean up the pantry space, help receive weekly produce donations, and assist clients as they choose their own groceries from our available fresh produce and shelf-stable foods. After pantry is over, volunteers also help set-up grocery bags for senior citizens or families in the EEH, depending on the day. People skills are a must for this opportunity! Our distribution is also an ideal time to employ or practice language skills - particularly Haitian Creole, Portuguese, and Spanish. Volunteers should be able to comfortably lift a minimum of 20 lbs, though we are happy to make reasonable accommodations.

Food Pantry for

The American Red Cross of Massachusetts
101 Station Landing #510, Medford, MA 02155

The food pantry is a critical resource for so many people, especially at times like this. We have increased our sanitation and social distancing protocol to continue to keep our workforce and our clients safe while we continue to provide this critical service to our neighbors in need. Stocking up and getting ready to potentially self-quarantine is not a feasible option for many of the folks that we serve. Many do not have a clear path to their next meal let alone food for two weeks.

Food Transportation for

Berkshire Bounty
33 Commonwealth Ave, Great Barrington, MA 01230

Berkshire Bounty has implemented significant operational changes since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. These changes include the following:
  1. Increased the amount of food purchased from our supermarket and food wholesaler food sources which was made possible by the significant increase in the number of donations and grants received by BB over the last few months.
  2. Expanded our impact through our participation in a groundswell coalition made up of funding sources, area school districts and other non-profits involved in the food insecurity movement in the Berkshires.
  3. Focused our collection and delivery efforts on larger food sources and distribution organizations in order to maximize our efficiency and productivity.
  4. Increased the number of volunteers which was particularly useful in light of the temporary withdrawal of a good number of our older volunteers who understandably chose to more rigorously shelter-in-place in order to minimize their health risk exposure.
  5. Converted our refrigerated storage space to a community resource in order to allow other organizations access thereby making the space into a centralized distribution center.
