Ways to help

Counter Volunteer

The Cape Ann Food Pantry is a full choice pantry. The counter volunteer offers clients a variety of perishable and nonperishable items and hands these items to the client to place in grocery bags.

Preparing and Setting Up for Meals

All surfaces in the dining room and kitchen are sanitized with a bleach solution. If time allows, all chairs are quickly wiped down. Tables in our dining room are set with place mats, napkins and utensils, water glasses, salt and pepper caddies and centerpieces.

Clean Up Volunteer

When the meal ends, tables must be cleared, sanitized and the floor swept in the dining room. On Thursdays, chairs are stacked against the wall. In the kitchen, all dishes must be sanitized in the dishwasher, counters sanitized, floor swept and mopped and trash taken out.

Serve the Meal

Our volunteers act as wait staff for the evening. Guests are not allowed to serve themselves, so volunteers should be attentive to their needs and keep circulating in the dining room. We have a dual mission of hospitality and encourage our volunteers to engage in friendly conversation with our guests and to take time to sit and share a meal with them.

Food Pick-Up Volunteer

Food is rescued from local supermarkets on a weekly basis and we need volunteers to help pick up these items. Volunteer must have transportation and valid driver's license.

Stocking Shelves & Cleaning

Upon arrival, take a minute to assess the shelves to determine what items are needed and inform the manager or staff member on duty. After deliveries have been received, they may be stocked in the food pantry or stored for later use.

Second Glance Thrift Store Volunteer

Volunteers at Second Glance receive, screen, and price donations and stock them on the sales floor. Volunteers should be courteous to other volunteers and staff. Any donations you work on should be screened, sorted, and put on the sales floor before you leave.
How you help Volunteers allow our our programs to provide 1,837,094 pounds of food to 7,747 people representing 3,487 unique households over the course of a year.
About us The Open Door began in 1978 as an emergency food resource for families and individuals on Cape Ann. We use practical strategies to connect people to good food, to advocate on behalf of those in need, and to engage others in the work of building food security. Our continuing goal is to deepen our programs to provide low-income households with consistent access to adequate nutritional resources in a socially acceptable environment.
