Ways to help

Volunteer Invoicer

Invoicers make sure that the chosen books are appropriate and do not contain any forbidden items. If they are good to go, they fill out an invoice. People who can read at least at the high school-level, have legible handwriting and good attention to detail are great candidates for this job.

Volunteer Picker

Pickers read a prisoner’s hand-written request and find appropriate books in our book store. Pickers are essentially personal shoppers for the prisoners. If you enjoy browsing in your local library or bookstore, this is the job for you! High school-level reading skills and a love of books are all you need to do this job.

How you helpHundreds of people volunteer their time at Prison Book every year and do everything from sort the mail to post office runs.
About usPrison Book Program is a grassroots organization that exists for one purpose—to send free books to prisoners. Books are crucial to the political, spiritual, and educational development of all people. Most prisons do not allow family and friends to send books into prisons; they must come from a bookstore or publisher. Our affiliation with the Lucy Parsons Bookstore and our many sources of books to serve incarcerated people allows us to serve several thousand prisoners every year. In a time of cuts in educational programs for prisons, we serve a vital purpose.
