Online Job Search Assistant

Review résumé and cover letter for assigned participant. Provide suggestions and feedback to staff by email or by phone. Search online for full-time job opportunities which are a match for participant’s skills, experience, education, and interests. Email job descriptions to staff.

Job Search Coach

Work one-on-one with a participant who is actively searching for full-time employment. Provide assistance based on the person’s individual needs. Job search activities include exploring career paths, identifying skills, researching job opportunities, helping with cover letters, typing up reference list, completing online applications, researching companies, preparing for upcoming job interviews, and following up with thank you notes after interviews.

"Lunch and Learn" Presenter

Over lunch, speak to group of job seekers about a topic of your choosing. Present and share hand-outs if helpful. Topics can be anything which will benefit job seekers. For example: how to get ahead in your career, secret to your career success, overview of the industry you work in, what employers look for, or how to use technology in your job search. Expertise in subject area which you will be presenting on.

Practice Phone Interviewer

Conduct 10-15 minute interviews with clients by phone. Review résumé and ask questions based on the individual’s experience, education, target job, and target industry. Identify strengths, weaknesses, challenges and success stories. Encourage participants to ask questions. Talk through next steps of setting up an in-person interview (for practice only). We will provide a guideline which includes specific questions to ask. After the interview, write your comments on feedback form, identify interview strengths and areas for improvement.

Résumé Coach

Meet with participants to help them draft a strong résumé, following the Career Collaborative guidelines. Discuss and record their prior work history, volunteer work, education, skills and qualifications. Organize information into a concise and well-formatted résumé. Volunteer can type up résumé together with the participant during the meeting, or can work on edits independently after the meeting. Prior experience as a hiring manager, human resources professional, recruitment specialist, talent acquisition specialist, or interviewer helpful.

Interview Coach

Meet with one participant for one hour to review commonly asked interview questions and help to prepare and practice answers, according to the Career Collaborative model and guidelines. Write out answers which participant can use as a guideline to practice on their own in the future. Identify participant’s skills, strengths and relevant experience, as well as weaknesses or areas for improvement. Sample questions will be provided, along with training about how Career Collaborative coaches participants to answer interview questions. Prior experience as a hiring manager, human resources professional, recruitment specialist, talent acquisition specialist, or interviewer helpful.

Job Club Facilitator

Using workbook and case studies as a guideline, facilitate job search support group. Help participants as a group to set goals, identify next steps in their job search, share ideas, networking opportunity, and success stories. Provide support, advice, and motivation for job seekers. Prior experience facilitating groups. Knowledge of effective job search practices helpful.

How you help

Volunteers, especially professionals from businesses in the Greater Boston area, teach unemployed and under-employed adults with low-income jobs how to build meaningful careers.
About us

We teach unemployed and under-employed adults with low-income jobs in the Greater Boston area age 22 to 55 how to build careers through job readiness and job search training, as well as and career coaching for up to two years after they land their first job. After successfully completing the job readiness course, clients begin searching for a job. Working one-on-one with our employment counselors, they write cover letters, refine their résumés, and continue preparing for interviews. When participants accept a job, our skilled coaches work one-on-one with them for up to two years.
