Ways to help

Meal Service Volunteer

Each day, NECHV serves between 380-400 meals to Veteran residents and Veterans accessing services through our programs. Volunteer teams of up to 5-7 individuals serve meals behind the line. This is a great way to support our kitchen staff and get to directly interact with Veteran residents. Meal service is an ideal volunteer outing for clubs, companies, and individuals. Many groups have regularly scheduled meal service dates each month.

Other Opportunities

Other volunteering opportunities are developed on a case by case basis, depending upon need and availability. Examples are sorting and preparing supplies for Veterans, coaching and teaching at the Veterans Training School, and participating in special work details, projects and corporate work outings. Volunteers with specific skills can also volunteer their services.

How you helpEach year over 1,400 volunteers assist Veterans at NECHV by serving meals at the Center. Community involvement at NECHV is vital to our mission and helps to bridge gaps of support in terms of time, talent, and resources.
About usThe Center was created in 1990 as the nation’s first and largest Veteran-specific homeless shelter. It began as a 100-bed, emergency facility in a surplus VA office building. Since that time, the NECHV has continued to improve its specialized model for Veterans. The Center has developed a comprehensive residential treatment program (serving over 300 veterans at any given time) comprised of the emergency housing and transitional housing program, including specialized housing for female homeless Veterans in the NECHV Women’s Dormitory Program. NECHV also provides extensive services in substance abuse counseling, post detox, mental health, case management, accessing the Veterans Administration system, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), pre-employment training, post-incarceration re-integration, job placement, housing placement, dental and medical treatment, and daily hot meals.
