Ways to help

After School Tutor

Tutor children in our after-school program. Tutors have the ability to sign up for one or more hours per week. Our tutors work with children of all ages in a supportive after-school program. This includes engaging children with academics, helping with homework, providing additional educational help, supporting and encouraging the children, and helping to provide a positive atmosphere.

Maintenance

Are you a natural organizer? Do you know how to paint? Do you like working outside? If you answered yes to any of those questions, you could help us keep our various properties nice and clean for our families!

Hosting a Drive

Finding affordable housing is a huge step for homeless families. Once housing is found, though, families have to fill the house with all the items needed for day to day living. For a family living on the edge of homelessness, the cost of these household items can be a huge obstacle. You can help by hosting a drive for needed items!

Administrative and Development Volunteer

Assist our main office with daily administrative tasks. This may include greeting visitors, preparing materials for events, helping with research projects, and contributing to an overall positive environment. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in an office setting with some amazing people.

Events

Housing Families hosts and participates in many fundraising and outreach events in the community every year. Volunteers are a big part of the success of these events. This is a great opportunity for someone who is enthusiastic but can't make a long term commitment.

Children's Van Driver Assistant

Attend to the children as we drive them to and from our programs. This volunteer is needed to help supervise the children during transportation, as well as assisting our van driver. This includes keeping the children engaged during transit, maintaining a safe atmosphere, managing potential conflict between children, and informing parents prior to arrival at their residence.

How you helpWe believe teamwork is the foundation of an effective and successful environment in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts and volunteers are a critical part of our team.
About usSince 1986, HFI has expanded its services beyond a shelter and case management to include an academic and therapeutic program for children, youth and adults, which includes after school and summer enrichment components. In addition, HFI operates a nationally recognized eviction prevention program, a housing stabilization program, and has grown into one of the largest operators of affordable housing for homeless and very low-income families in Massachusetts.
