Ways to help

Farming Volunteer/Flower Garden Volunteer

From April through October, we depend upon thousands of helping hands working outside with us morning and afternoon. When you arrive, you walk out through the fields to our farm pavilion. You are welcomed and given an introduction to Gaining Ground and our hunger-relief role. Our farmers explain what’s going on at the farm and the tasks they’ve lined up, based on the the skills and abilities of that day’s volunteers. Then, you work alongside our staff—planting, weeding, harvesting or perhaps seeking out potato beetles. At the end of your visit, our farm staff returns with you to the pavilion to share observations and experiences.

Sugaring Volunteer

For a span of about six weeks in February and March, we collect buckets of sap from sugar maple trees in Concord and boil it into syrup, donated at Thanksgiving to families seeking hunger relief. Space is limited and the schedule is variable.

Volunteer Produce Delivery Drivers

We are seeking volunteers to help transport boxes of fresh, organic produce from our farm in Concord to various sites in the greater Boston area. Most opportunities take place during Tuesdays or Thursdays, from about 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Drivers must have a clean driver's license and a reliable vehicle that can hold 20 large boxes. Some heavy lifting is required. Please email [email protected] with your interest and availability.

How you help We are a volunteer-driven organization that relies on the energy, talent, and enthusiasm of thousands of people. Because of your help, we can grow and donate nutritious local produce to people in need of fresh, healthy food.
About us Gaining Ground grows organic produce for hunger relief with help from volunteers of all ages and abilities, who work and learn in our fields. In short, we grow food and we give it away to people who need it. For free. This refreshingly simple approach lets us focus on meeting the needs of our volunteers and the people we help feed. These two aspects of our work are closely intertwined—one wouldn’t work without the other. Our approach is local and sustainable—most of our produce is distributed within 20 miles of our farm and within 24 hours of harvest.
