Food Delivery Driver

Food for Free seeks volunteers to deliver boxes of food to homebound/vulnerable people experiencing food insecurity in Cambridge and the surrounding area. Routes start from the packing center in Somerville, with each volunteer delivering 8-10 boxes weighing approximately 30 pounds each.

Food Delivery Drivers use their own vehicles to bring food to individual households. Over time, food delivery volunteers develop a consistent connection with recipients, providing important informal check-ins on community members' well-being.

Volunteers must have access to a car and be able to lift 35 pounds. Most shifts occur during weekday business hours, though some opportunities for weekend work may be available as well. Volunteers are typically asked to commit to two shifts per month, but some on-call drivers are also needed to fill in shifts.

Grocery Box Packers - Just Eats and Healthy Eats

Volunteers help pack grocery boxes for Food for Free's Just Eats and Healthy Eats programs. Volunteers will work together to fill each box with healthy fruits, vegetables, and pantry staples like rice and beans.

Food for Free's Just Eats program provides healthy food to community partners for grab-and-go distribution to local individuals and families in need. Volunteers help pack 25-pound grocery boxes full of produce and pantry staples, which are then delivered to food pantries, low-income housing facilities, and schools in the surrounding area.

Food For Free's Healthy Eats program provides grocery boxes to homebound individuals in Cambridge. Clients can elect to receive meat, vegetarian, pescetarian, vegan, or nut free boxes. This program operates every other week and includes weekend opportunities.

Food for Free Heat-n-Eats Volunteers

Heat-n-Eats volunteers help repurpose and repackage prepared food from local universities, offices, and hospitals into healthy single-serving meals. These heat-and-eat meals are then distributed to community members and families with limited access to kitchens, or with other barriers to cooking for themselves.

Groups are welcome. Work takes place at Food for Free's dedicated Heat-n-Eats kitchen, located on the Biogen campus in Kendall Square in Cambridge.

About us Food For Free improves access to healthy food within our community by rescuing food that would otherwise go to waste and creating new distribution channels to under-served populations with an emphasis on utilizing school systems to reach those in need. We envision a future where everyone in our community – regardless of age, income, or ability – has consistent access to fresh, healthy, delicious food. Through a combination of food rescue and transportation services, we give food programs year-round access to fresh fruits and vegetables, while our direct service programs bring food to students, seniors, and others most at risk of hunger.
