Food for Free seeks volunteers to deliver boxes of food to homebound/vulnerable people experiencing food insecurity in Cambridge and the surrounding area. Routes start from the packing center in Somerville, with each volunteer delivering 8-10 boxes weighing approximately 30 pounds each.
Food Delivery Drivers use their own vehicles to bring food to individual households. Over time, food delivery volunteers develop a consistent connection with recipients, providing important informal check-ins on community members’ well-being.
Volunteers must have access to a car and be able to lift 35 pounds. Most shifts occur during weekday business hours, though some opportunities for weekend work may be available as well. Volunteers are typically asked to commit to two shifts per month, but some on-call drivers are also needed to fill in shifts.
