Ways to help

Bill Payer Volunteer - Help Keep our Older Neighbors Safe & Secure!

What you offer:
  • Experience with your own household budgeting and daily money management
  • Patience, proactivity, and great attention to detail
  • The desire to make a real difference in someone’s life
  • 2-3 hours per month, at a time that works best for you
The Boston Money Management Program (BMMP) at Ethos is a powerful volunteer-based program for low-income older adults whose cognitive or physical condition makes it difficult to carry out the routine tasks of money management. As a Volunteer Bill Payer, you would be trained to assist your client by sorting mail, writing out checks, balancing bank statements, and performing other similar tasks. The mission of the BMMP is to promote the dignity and autonomy of older adults and disabled individuals in Boston who do not have family or friends nearby who they can rely on. Volunteer Bill Payers help stabilize clients prevent evictions due to non-payment of rent, loss of utility and phone service, and premature placement of elders in nursing homes. If you would like to learn more about this opportunity to make a dramatic difference in the life of an older adult, please contact Kate at [email protected] or 617-477-6622.

Use Your Voice for Vulnerable Seniors!

Ethos' dedicated and passionate Ombudsman volunteers visit nursing facilities and rest homes in Boston on a regular basis and meet with residents and their families. Ombudsmen advocate for quality of life issues such as timely response by nursing facility staff to requests for assistance, facility cleanliness and meal quality.  Ombudsman volunteers are absolutely crucial to the safety and wellbeing our city’s most vulnerable elders. Ombudsman volunteers… - Visit nursing facilities in Boston to meet with residents - Interact with residents and their families - Advocate for elder concerns - Report unresolved issues To Become an Ombudsman Volunteer, and give voice in advocacy to residents of Long Term Care facilities, one must attend a virtual training, lasting approximately 5 weeks, 3 partial days per week. The Ombudsman Program is fully operational at this time, with safety measures being taken in each facility including: a private room with space for social distancing for meetings with residents, outdoor meetings when possible, PPE requirements, and more.

How you help Make a senior smile! Volunteers have been a critical component of Ethos’ mission to keep elders living at home with dignity and independence.
About us Ethos was founded in 1973 by a grassroots coalition of community activists and social service providers. Their pioneering vision was to create an alternative to prevailing institutional models of care, which they believed robbed the elderly and disabled of their autonomy and disconnected them from social and community life. We have a proud track record of developing programs and services that are welcoming, inclusive and culturally appropriate. Many of our early pilot programs are now standard offerings across the nation. Ethos owes much of its success to a robust set of collaborations we have developed over the years with other institutions and organizations.
