Academic Mentor

Academic Mentors (AMs) support students who need additional assistance with classwork and homework throughout the school year while providing mentorship to students by offering guidance around non-cognitive skills such as study skills, organization, and self-advocacy. Academic mentoring sessions will consist of tutoring in core academic subjects identified by Breakthrough staff as well as coaching around effective study habits and strategies

Skilled Volunteers

For those with professional-level skills to share, we always need assistance with web design, photography, videography, graphic design and printing.

College Preparation Volunteer

Coaches work one-on-one to support students throughout the college application process and specifically with writing admissions essays. Volunteers can also help give our students the opportunity to practice interviewing in advance of college admissions or internship interviews or entrance to other academic enrichment programs.

Host a Student

Host one of our committed students at your organization for 2-5 days a week for at least six weeks over the summer.

Event Volunteer

Event volunteers assist in a variety of ways from planning an event, setting up for an event and other day of tasks, hosting a information session to introduce people to Breakthrough, or help provide meals for teachers and students.

Office Projects

How you helpWe simply could not achieve our mission without scores of talented and dedicated volunteers. In fact, we have over 150 volunteers working with our students, teachers and program on an annual basis.

Through six years of intensive, tuition-free, out of school time programming, Breakthrough changes students' academic trajectories and supports them along the path to four-year college. Simultaneously, BTGB builds the next generation of teachers through competitive recruitment, research-based training, and coaching from master teachers. At Breakthrough, students and teachers and closing the achievement gap one breakthrough at a time.
