Our mission

Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services promotes the right of all individuals to live with dignity, in the setting of their choice by offering older people, younger people with disabilities, and caregivers the information, services and support needed to make choices which enhance health, well being and independence.
Opportunities

Money Management

Make a difference in the life of an older adult neighbor in Somerville or Cambridge by enabling them to continue to live independently – become a Money Management program Bill Payer volunteer! Assist one of our consumers by making sure the bills are paid on time. This volunteer role is primarily responsible for helping a client organize and pay bills and develop a household budget so they can live within their means.  Regularly scheduled rent and utility payments enable people to continue living in their homes. Time: Two to four hours a month that can be scheduled based on your availability.  We’re looking for volunteers who plan to stay with the program for at least a year.

Technology Coach

Technology Coach Volunteers work with older adults to navigate technology basics. Volunteers may connect clients to the internet and get them started with common apps such as email, Zoom, or telehealth. They provide support through workshops, drop-in sessions and or home visits. We are looking for volunteers who can support 3 sessions a month. Hours are typically weekday mornings or afternoons. This is a great opportunity for those who need more flexibility but want to volunteer on a regular basis. Only minimal tech experience required.

Medical Escort

Accompany age 60+ residents of Somerville and Cambridge, MA to medical appointments (in a taxi or your own vehicle).  Our ideal Escort volunteer is compassionate, reliable, and communicative.  How it works: When we receive a Medical Escort request, we email our Escort volunteers with the relevant details.  If you’re available, just reply, and we put you in contact with the older adult.  A trip may be round trip (to the appointment and back) or pickup only (at the conclusion of the visit). Schedule and Commitment: Often, trips require two to four hours of a volunteer’s time.  Importantly, this role requires availability on weekdays during regular business hours.  We’re looking for volunteers who can plan to stay with the program for at least a year.  

Appointments may be in cities and towns adjacent to Somerville and Cambridge — and are frequently located in Boston. Other requirements:- Fill out our volunteer application to get started.

Caring Neighbor

If you have a few hours each month to help a neighbor, you can: Run an errand for them while you’re running your own; Take them for a walk or read them the newspaper; Shovel their sidewalk in the winter time. Skills: Being a good neighbor!

How you help

We provide comprehensive information and assistance to older adults, younger people with disabilities and their caregivers on aging, long-term care, and other related issues and concerns. Our volunteer programs provide important support in areas not covered by state funding.
About us

Since 1972, Somerville-Cambridge Elder Services (SCES) has been the area’s aging information and service center. SCES helps older people and people living with disabilities remain safe and independent in their own homes by providing a wide range of supportive services, as well as information and advice. SCES services are available to older residents of Cambridge and Somerville, as well as their caregivers. Some services are open to adults with disabilities who are age 16 or older, and to residents of the Greater Boston area.
